Farmhouse kitchens are all the rage right now. Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE farmhouse everything. But you know something I’m not seeing with these?
Functionality
White cabinets. Decorations all over the counter tops. Kitchens are starting to look like show rooms, and I don’t know about you all, but my kitchen gets heavily used.
Living on a farm or homestead means your farmhouse kitchen is a bit different from others. We want it to be pretty, sure. But we need it to work as well.
I remember my grandparents kitchen. Work always had to be done in there. Dough making, canning, baking. They made all of their own food. It was a REAL farmhouse kitchen. While it was very used, it had its own real farmhouse kitchen beauty. So, when I started looking into redoing our kitchen I knew I needed items that were both pretty, and functional. Kitchen supplies that served a purpose rather than just pretty decorations (I do have some of those too though).
So, instead of throwing up bunches of shelves full or decorations and signs that say “farmhouse” I started thinking of things that would be durable, usable, and pretty. Things that would help me organize and make my cooking and baking flow better and look good while doing it.
Here are my fully functional farmhouse kitchen items.
Functional Farmhouse Kitchen Items
Functional Farmhouse Kitchen:
Food Storage Items
Glass Storage
I decided with all of my food storage items, I am going to go with glass. Why? Because they don’t stain or hold smell. You don’t have to worry about BPA’s or leaving traces of chemicals in your food. And, they look pretty.
For my dry foods and ingredients, I went with these apocrathy jars.
I was getting super tired of dealing with bags of flour and sugar while I was doing a day of hardcore baking and cooking. These jars are a nice way to store things you use allot of, and what is more farmhouse than baking ingredients sitting in glass jars on your counters or shelves?
I used 2 gallon glass jars for my flour and sugar (we use a lot of those around here) and 1 gallon jars for my coffee and brown sugar.
NOTE: When storing your brown sugar, grab one of these terracotta disks. They keep your brown sugar from hardening! I Also picked up some of these chalkboard stickers for the outsides of my glass jars. I just measured to the center and placed them on each one.
Wire Racks and baskets
Living on a small farm, we end up with a lot of fresh produce. With our counter space being limited, I needed something to hold all of it….and kind of put it out in the open in hopes that my family remembers it is there before it rots.
I found this cute wire rack with baskets and thought it would be perfect for just that!
I bought two of these wire baskets and hung them on my island. One holds cook books and the other holds cutting boards.
Functional Farmhouse Kitchen: Organizational Items
Rolling Pin Holder
Wraps and Paper Towel Organization
I was SO TIRED of my saran warp and aluminum foil being crammed into a drawer, making it super fun to open when I needed them. So part of making my kitchen functional was to find better ways to store things I used heavily. This wrap holder adds to the farmhouse charm but makes my life so much easier.
Pot And Pan Holder
Adding beauty to your farmhouse kitchen is simple. Take the things you use, and find a way to display them. If you have pretty pans, or cast iron, these pot and pan hangers are a wonderful way of store your treasures out in the open. Adding to the functional farmhouse charm.
Utensil Holder
I use a ceramic pitcher to store my favorite utensils right next to my stove. It makes them easy to access and adds that functional farmhouse touch. This one is very similar to what I have, but there are tons of cute holders out there.
Spice Rack
I picked this spice rack for many reasons. it can be hung, sat on your counter, or in your cabinet. It comes with different labels and a few blank to make your own. Being a homesteader, I like to dry my own herbs and make my own spices. So it is nice to have this versatility.
Functional Farmhouse:
Cooking Items
Who says cooking can’t be pretty. Part of a fully functional farmhouse kitchen is having items that can be used, and decoration. I love having items that can be cooked with, or placed out on the counter for decoration. Here are some of my favorites for just that.
Mixing bowls
These farmhouse mixing bowls are so multi-functional. I serve food in them, use them to prepare meals, and put them in my open cabinet for decoration. BONUS: these are part of a collection, so there are other kitchen pieces that you can get to match them.
Cast Iron
Everything tastes better in a cast iron skillet. And what says farmhouse more than a cast iron sitting on the stove. I love that they are so pretty and durable. I can cook a meal with it, and threaten my husband when hes acting a fool. Here are a few cast iron pieces I have. (having hubby build me a wall to store them on.
Cooking utensils
If you are setting them out on the counter in a holder, then you are going to want not only nice looking utensils, but durable as well. You need to be able to put them through the ringer, and still put them out for all to see. That is why i really love wood utensils. I use them, scrub them, and occasionally give them a rub down with some oil and they are good to go. I love the second set with the non stick on them for when I am entertaining or baking. They scrape the bottom of the bowl really well.
Dishes
I have small children, so those fancy fragile dishes weren’t for me. BUT look at this Melamine set! I found them and knew they would look good in my open cabinet, and my kids (or clumsy husband) can’t break them. They look like the real deal!
Butter Dish
If you do a lot of cooking and baking, like I do, then having butter already out and at room temperature is life changing. No more waiting for butter to soften….unless I need more than what I have left out! This is something my grandma’s farmhouse kitchen always had as well.
Egg Holder
If you are like me, and have chickens, then an egg rack is super nice. we leave our clean, unwashed eggs on the counter. They are pretty to look at, and last way longer than washed and refrigerated eggs. Here is the rack I have and LOVE. Because if I do need to wash eggs, i just throw a towel under this baby and set them out to dry.

Metal measuring cups and spoons
Ceramic Measuring Bowls
If I am doing any baking with company around…or need to take some cute Instagram baking pictures (haha) I pull these out. They are so cute I feel like I need to put on a little white apron when using them.
Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer
This thing sets on my counter, out in the open for everyone to see that I mean business in this kitchen. I cant express enough how useful this baby it for someone that actually uses their kitchen. Mine is in black and chrome and just matches my kitchen so perfectly.
Mason Jar Everything
Maybe I went a little overboard with mason jar stuff, but you know, you can always find mason jars. You can use them to can, drink out of, and store everything under the sun. Nothing says functional farmhouse kitchen more than some mason jars. Here are some of the cool little mason jar Items that transform your every day canning jar into a cool little kitchen gadget.
Mason Jar Cups
I have always loved how certain restaurants use mason jars as cups. I bought us a set with handles. They are affordable, and if one break, you can easily replace it.
Mason Jar Syrup Lid
We buy local syrup, and it usually already comes in a mason jar, which is awesome, but messy. This baby right here looks so cool, and makes pouring syrup less messy
Mason Jar Sprouting Lids
I started growing sprouts in my kitchen window year round with these. The rabbits love them and i can use them in a few of my favorite recipes. How pretty are these though?
Mason Jar straw lids
I bought these originally for a cook out i was having. They ended up being perfect for keeping bugs out of our drinks. We use them with every meal. Our house is chaotic, and it keeps our drinks from spilling. I also grabbed some of these chalkboard labels for them. That way when we have company over, we can label our drinks.
Mason Jar Honey Dipper

Wondering why there aren’t any pictures of my farmhouse kitchen? Those are coming soon! We are in the middle of a remodel and I can’t wait to show you! Follow my on Instagram for updates!!
