Are you looking for some great gift ideas for homesteaders in your life? Homesteaders are a hard bunch to figure out if you don’t homestead yourself. Most are trying to live a more simple life, and would really benefit from things that are more practical. I know, it sounds boring. Like, oh….you want a pan and a book for Christmas? BUT, you know how excited I would be, as a homesteader, to get some of these things as a gift? I mean, for my 29th birthday my husband bought me a Harbour Freight greenhouse, and I proclaimed it the best birthday I have ever had.
While homesteaders are simple and easy to please, this list should help give you some great ideas for your particular homesteader, that you may not have thought of.
Here are some great gifts for homesteaders.
Gift Ideas For Homesteaders

Kitchen Items

Kitchen Scale
Homesteaders grow, and bake, and preserve everything. And to do all of those things, sometimes you have to have the precise weight of things.
With kitchen scales you have two options. Digital, or analog. Digital scales to me are really nice and user friendly, BUT depending on your homesteader, they could be getting away from technology, so you may need to look at an analog scale. Both are around $20 or less.
Enameled Dutch Oven
If you have a bread baker on your hands, chances are they have their eyes on one of these bad boys. Even if they aren’t a bread baker, you cant go wrong. These hold up so well, and danged near anything can be cooked in them, and they look good doing it!
Le Creuset is a nice but EXPENSIVE brand. I have found that brands like Lodge and even the Amazon Basics brand actually work just as well, for not even a fraction of the cost.
Cast Iron
If you want to buy your homesteader a pan, make sure it is THE pan. Don’t know what I am talking about? Let me enlighten you.

Rather your homesteader has one, none, or 15 of these guys, they will gladly receive another one. If you can find one of the heritage brands on the marketplace, that would be fantastic, but if not, a new one works fine too! Cool thing about cast iron is, it is one thing people don’t actually care if they get second hand. They are so durable, and most people want to clean and re-season them their own way any way.
Lodge cast iron has been around for some time, and is actually pretty amazing. You can find cast iron pans at any of your major stores, and if you don’t see them in the cooking isles with the other pans, try the camping isle.
If you want to set your homesteader up right, or if you are looking for an affordable gift, throw in a cast iron care kit.
Compost Bin

A compost bin is really a gift for any homesteader. Just starting out? Compost bin. No land? Compost bin.
I know you are like….whhhaaa?
While you CAN get them the giant yard sized bin if they have a garden and the space for it, what I am talking about is a little smaller.
These little bins actually go in your house. Right on your counter or under your sink. These make it so you can compost right in your kitchen. Which is nice for your apartment homesteader, clear up to your full sized, grows everything under the sun, gardener. These little compost bins allow you to make your own soil right in your house. Another idea, get one for yourself too and make some compost yourself. Families who compost together, stay together! Okay, so I just made that part up.
Wouldn’t this thing make the coolest infomercial?
No gimics! Real soil, right in your home! Now I just need one of these companies to come pick up on this. PURE. GOLD
Mason Jars
So like, who is going to get excited about some jars? Homesteaders, that’s who. You know what you can use mason jars for? Anything. Candles, homemade lotions, body scrubs, soap dispensers, canning, storage.
If mason jars sound a little borring to you, what about some cool mason jar accessories? Now, I am going to sound like Hank Hill to you over here, but hear me out.
Mason Jars, and mason jar accessories:
Soap Dispenser With Jar
Foaming Soap Dispenser Lid
Sprouting Lids
Manual Butter Churn
Oil Dispenser Lid
Spiralizer
Coffee Spoon With Holder
Honey Dipper Lid
Drink Lid
Juicer Lid
Syrup Dispenser Lid
And these are just a few! So, I will tell you again. You can’t go wrong with mason jars.
Baking Supplies
If your homesteader loves to bake, here are some awesome baking supplies that will come in handy.
Proofing Baskets– Good for bread bakers
Lame– For scoring artisan breads
Baking Stone– These are amazing for keeping your oven evenly heated while baking
Danish Dough Whisk
Non-stick baking mats
Mixing Bowls– Everyone needs a good set, and these are my favorite, simple, but all the sizes I could need
Seeds
So what seeds do homesteaders need? The answer is, yes.
All the seeds. As homesteaders, we like to experiment and grow different things. I don’t think you can go wrong with seeds. Look for heirloom varieties though, if possible. My favorite place to find seeds is actually Etsy. I just think of a variety, type it in and click through them. When I find seeds I like, I look at what else that seller has to offer. If they are a grower, they sometimes offer bundles as well.

There are also seed bank kits that you can get that have a bit of everything in them.
Magazine Subscriptions
No, not Cosmo. Homestead and farming magazines are different. They offer real information. Heritage recipes, growing tips, fixes, real stories from real people in rural America. These are so fun to get in the mail every month to see what’s new. A lot of the time, I see people doing some of the same things I am doing, but maybe with a few tricks to make them easier.
Lets start with some of my favorites:
Countryside
Hobby Farms
Farm Show
New Pioneer
Mother Earth News
Backwoods Home
I mean, I would compare me getting one of my homesteading magazines in the mail to me at 13 getting one of those Teen magazines with the Backstreet boys in it. Heck. I even squeal and do a happy dance just the same.
Books
Books. Yawn. Am I right?
Actually, quite the opposite. When it is a topic you are interested, it can be pretty exciting getting a book as a present. And, homesteaders like the feel of a real book in their hand. Its solid, and reliable. These books act as a reference when we have questions or need help.
So, what books are good for homesteaders? Heritage cooking and baking. Anything gardening related. Projects. DIY. Books full of knowledge and answers to questions they may have.

Homesteaders brave the elements. All of them. No matter the weather, they have chores to do. If you are looking for gifts they will definitly get some use out of, their outdoor apparel is a good place to look.

Do they trample in mud? Snow? Cow crap? Boots is a good way to go, but not just any boots. Muck boots. These will stand up to all crappy weather. And honestly, it doesn’t matter if they already have a pair, it’s always good to have a backup.
Winter Wear
If its the snow they are working in, winter work gloves and insulated toboggans are going to be their best friend. Best thing is, you don’t really have to know their sizes to buy these. They are sure to thank you when they are out in the blistering cold tending to animals. Insulated overalls are another winter must have for a homesteader.
Poultry Supplies
Poultry keepers. Chicken lovers. Your neighborhood crazy chicken lady. Fun bunch of people…not like I would know or anything.
Here are some useful chicken people gifts, as opposed to the usual socks with chickens on them.
Chickens
Yes, actual live chickens, or even hatching eggs. Oh how happy I would be to get a box of little peeping chicks as a present. Murray McMurray hatchery is probably my favorite place for rare or specific breeds of chicks, but most feeds stores have them as well.

One thing a chicken person has a lot of. Eggs. From collecting the eggs, keeping them organized, to packaging and selling. Chicken keepers use a few supplies.
